EquityAlchemist (WFDR01): Results came in for Covestro. As expected top-line, EBITDA and bottom-line imploded on the back of particular weakness from the automotive sector. Add to that a significant increase in CAPEX (mainly due to capacity expansion set do come online in 2021) which led to a reduction of free-cash-flow by about 90%. The outlook for the remainder of 2019 has essentially been confirmed. All of that looks weak at first. However, when we look deeper into the numbers we see particular strength in all of Covestros markets except for automotive. Especially electronics stands out. This led to significant yoy volume growth for both (!) the PU and PC segments. So to us this looks like an intrinsically strong business with adequate management response to a difficult global-market environment, that pressured wholesale prices and margins. 2020 may be another lackluster year vor Covestro as the auto sector is still reeling and CAPEX commitments remain high. Yet only a slight uptick in pricing for PU and PC materials could lead to a surprisingly strong bottom-line (volume-expansion + margin growth). We believe the business fundamentals will not deteriorate much further in 2020 and 2021 should show a return to the growth trajectory. (28.10. 09:13)
