Brich (BRICH63): EARNINGS POLL-Nokia expected to report 37 pct drop in 3rd-quarter profit * Results due on Oct 27 at 0500 GMT * EBIT seen down 37 pct at 430 mln euros By Jussi Rosendahl HELSINKI, Oct 25 (Reuters) - Finland's Nokia is expected to report a 37 percent fall in third-quarter operating profit as telecom operators spend less on faster mobile network equipment. Shares in Nokia fell 4 percent on Oct. 12 after Swedish rival Ericsson < said its quarterly profit plunged more than 90 percent due to drop in demand and stiff competition from Nokia itself and China's Huawei ]. [ Analysts said Ericsson's numbers did not bode well for Nokia but added the Finnish company was less dependent on mobile broadband demand due to its 15.6 billion euro ($17.0 billion) merger with Alcatel-Lucent which gave it a larger fixed-line network business. "It's tough to read (Ericsson results) for Nokia but given how widespread the weakness is - including Europe and India where Nokia is present - we believe the market will read this as incrementally worse for all competitors," UBS, which has a buy-rating on Nokia, said in a note to investors. In a Reuters poll of analysts, the average forecast for Nokia's third-quarter earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) is 430 million euros from 682 million a year earlier. Results are due to be published on Thursday. The networks business, which accounts for more than 90 percent of the company's sales, is expected to report a profit of 407 million euros, down from 678 million a year ago. Nokia has said it expected network sales and profits to improve towards the end of the year and that the network business' operating margin would be in a range of 7 to 9 percent in the full year. Analysts in the poll expect a third-quarter network margin of 7.6 percent, up from 6.0 in the second quarter, and a full-year margin of 8.0 percent. Nokia is cutting thousands of jobs worldwide following the Alcatel deal earlier this year as it seeks savings of 1.2 billion euros in 2018. "The main difference between Nokia and Ericsson is that Nokia adjusted operations before the demand started to deteriorate, whereas Ericsson's action have been reactive," Inderes analyst Mikael Rautanen, who has a reduce rating on Nokia, said. The global network gear market is falling after demand for current 4G equipment peaked last year and a new cycle of 5G network upgrades is not expected to begin until around 2020. Once the world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia was caught out by the rise of smartphones and ended up selling the handset business to Microsoft in 2014, leaving it with the networks business and a portfolio of technology patents. Microsoft has largely abandoned the business. In May, Nokia signed a licensing agreement to bring Nokia-branded smartphones back to the market. Estimate figures in millions of euros, except for EPS and dividend in euros. (25.10. 12:18)
