"Warsaw Exchange Said to Hold Merger Talks With Vienna Bourse

April 9 (Bloomberg) -- Warsaw Stock Exchange and the Vienna
bourse are holding talks to merge, which may create a hub for
equities trading and initial share offerings in central and
eastern Europe, said three people familiar with the talks.
Discussions between management and owners of the Vienna and
Warsaw exchanges are at a very early stage, said the people, who
asked not to be identified because the deliberations are
private. The negotiations may not lead to a transaction, the
people said.
The talks come as the exchanges vie for influence in the
region. Austria’s Wiener Boerse AG bought majority stakes in the
exchanges in Ljubljana and Prague in 2008 and Budapest in 2004.
The Warsaw exchange, which listed its stock in 2010, dominates
IPOs in the region.
Michael Buhl, CEO of the Vienna bourse’s parent company,
CEE Stock Exchange Group, will meet Warsaw’s new CEO Adam
Maciejewski in the coming days in an inaugural visit, Wiener
Boerse spokeswoman Beatrix Exinger said by telephone today. CEE
Stock Exchange Group is interested in cooperation with Warsaw,
she said, declining further comment. An official at the Warsaw
Stock Exchange declined to comment.
CEE Stock Exchange Group stands for Central and Eastern
Europe Stock Exchange Group and is based in Vienna. CEE Stock
Exchange Group said in March 2012 that it’s open to holding
“merger of equals” talks with the Warsaw Stock Exchange, its
biggest rival.
The Warsaw Stock Exchange, which is central Europe’s
biggest equity market, is currently valued at 1.62 billion
Polish zloty ($510 million). The exchange lists about 438
companies on its main market with a combined value of about 696
billion zloty."
