21st Austria weekly - Austrian tourism, Climate Protection study (26/10/2020)

01.11.2020

Austrian tourism: In the current summer season (May to September 2020), nights spent totaled 49.43 million, 29.9% below the level of the corresponding period of the previous year. While the number of nights spent by foreign guests fell by 40.6%, the number of nights spent by domestic guests was with -3.6% or 19.73 mn only slightly below the previous year's period. The arrivals in the previous summer season decreased by 40.7% to 13.33 mn.

For the most important countries of origin, double-digit falls in nights spent were reported, with the decrease among German guests being the lowest at 20.9% to 20.91 million nights spent, while the other countries of origin were in some cases well above the 30% mark. In the current calendar year 2020 (January to September), 91.65 million nights spent were registered, 27.7% fewer than in the same period of the previous year. The decrease amounts to 35.04 million by the end of September. The arrivals decreased in the same period by 37.2% to 23.29 mn.

Climate Protection: A WIFO study commissioned by the Länder examined the effects of economic stabilisation measures on climate mitigation and adaptation employment and added value. According to the study, climate protection measures can be designed to promote economic recovery. Commenting on the results, Ingrid Felipe (Tyrol), Chairperson of the Environment Committee, said: "This study is a valuable support from the scientific community in promoting more ecological investments locally in the provinces, which will help to mitigate the economic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis. The study results clearly show that investments in climate protection have a lasting positive effect on the economy". "In its regional economic monitoring, WIFO is constantly looking at the economy in the Länder. This study has now enabled us to contribute our expertise on environmental topics. As the results show, the Länder have far-reaching competencies to support the transformation of the economic system and at the same time to help cope with the economic consequences of the COVID-19 crisis", explained WIFO Director Christoph Badelt.
