OMV, Strabag, voestalpine: Three Austrian companies were among the world's top 1,000 corporations with the highest turnover: OMV (ranked 289), Strabag (463) and voestalpine (564), reports the international consulting firm EY. The measure of all things is still the US, which made 299 of the 1,000 largest companies. This was followed by Japan (146), China (79), Great Britain and France (45 each). While the largest North American companies were able to increase their sales by an average of 9 percent last year, the sales growth of their European counterparts averaged just 4.3 percent. Asia's major companies achieved growth of 8.4 percent. And Europe's top corporations are also losing ground in terms of earnings growth: they were able to increase their operating profit by 3.9 percent in 2018, while the US and Asian corporations more than doubled at 8.1 and 9.8 percent, respectively. Seven of the ten companies with the highest operating profits are based in the US. With the equivalent of 60 billion euros Apple 2018 was the leader in the profit ranking. The South Korean electronics group Samsung placed second with a good 45 billion euros. In third place followed Microsoft with about 30 billion euros. The most profitable European companies were three oil companies last year: Royal Dutch Shell in fourth place, BP in 15th place and Rosneft in 19th place. The most profitable European company, which can not be assigned to the oil industry, was in 2018 the Belgian brewing company Anheuser-Busch InBev 23rd place (15 billion euros). Volkswagen took 25th place in the profit ranking with just under € 14bn, and in the sales ranking the carmaker ranked seventh in the world.
