21st Austria weekly - Semperit, Valneva, OMV (10/06/2022)

Semperit: Semperit officialy opened the new North America headquarters and production site for rubber gaskets in the USA. "Fully confident that investing in the ongoing growth of the Semperit Group within the world’s biggest economic region will be critical to our future success, we are being driven by a market-led approach, focusing more on practical applications, and speeding up our product development processes,” says CEO Karl Haider at the official opening ceremony.  In line with the strategic commitment to customer proximity, the Semperit Executive Board made the decision two years ago to invest around USD 10 million (EUR 9.4 million) into the installation of two new production lines as well as the relocation of the existing headquarters and distribution centre for North America from Stone Mountain to Newnan within the state of Georgia. Although the new site has been in operation for a few months already, the coronavirus pandemic meant that the opening ceremony was delayed until today, with the Mayor Pro Tem of Newnan and representatives from Coweta County and the local chamber of commerce in attendance.

Valneva: Austrian/French Valneva, a specialty vaccine company, today provides an update on its European inactivated whole-virus COVID-19 vaccine candidate VLA2001. Following receipt of the European Commission (EC)’s notice of intent to terminate the Advance Purchase Agreement (APA), Valneva proposed a remediation plan, which is now subject to further discussion within the EC and among the participating member states. Some member states have confirmed their interest in having an inactivated, adjuvanted whole-virus vaccine solution in their portfolio. However, the preliminary, unofficial volume indications received from the EC would not be sufficient to ensure the sustainability of Valneva’s COVID-19 vaccine program. This would also impede the future development of the program beyond the current product profile. If such indications are confirmed, Valneva will not be able to enter into an amendment to the APA that could allow for a reduced order, and the EC is thus likely to terminate the agreement. As a result, Europeans would not have access to Valneva’s inactivated vaccine VLA2001. In parallel, the regulatory process with the European Medicine Agency (EMA) continues as planned. EMA accepted the filing of Marketing Authorization Application on May 19, 2022[ and the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) is expected to take a final vote during the week of June 21, 2022. Valneva also continues to work with agencies outside of the European Union for potential future approvals and additional purchase agreements.

OMV: During the legally required water pressure test as part of the final work on the OMV Schwechat Refinery’s turnaround, significant damage occurred to the crude oil distillation unit on June 3, 2022, following a mechanical incident. This unit processes most of the crude oil into its various components, thereby preparing it for further processing in the refinery. Immediately after the incident, a broad-based on-site task force was set up with the remit of investigating the incident and at the same time working on restoring operations. In the first phase, a comprehensive inspection checklist is being ticked off, based on a broad selection of non-destructive testing methods. In addition, material samples are being taken and these are tested for defects in special testing laboratories. Parallel to this, work is already underway on a detailed repair concept, with the first step being to optimize material procurement. Based on this, the most suitable repair methods will be identified and a corresponding schedule drawn up. At present it is not yet possible to estimate the duration of the repair phase. For the duration of the repairs, OMV has established a new supply system to supply the markets served by the OMV Schwechat Refinery.
