This week: one carmaker reduced, one boring software company in. Hardly the most exciting sentence ever published. That is the point. The carmaker is Nio. The battery-swap idea is clever, the way a good party trick is clever. Then BYD turned up charging a car in five minutes and the trick lost its room. Swap stations still need about sixty visits a day to pay for themselves and are running at roughly half that. The financials are improving, to be fair. But cars are a commodity, the eventual winner is impossible to call, and guessing which of forty brands survives a price war is not a paid sport. So the position was reduced this week. In its place: SAP. Unglamorous, mission-critical, impossible to rip out without a year of pain. Every company swears it will replace its thirty-year-old systems. Every company keeps them. SAP now charges extra for the AI bolted on top. That is not disruption. That is a toll booth with a software licence. One name out, one name in, the rest left in cash. Slow on purpose. | |||
