21st Austria weekly - Austrian Statistics: Cloud, Road Freight, Construction Cost, Used Cars (14/10/2020)

Cloud: 38% of Austrian enterprises use cloud services, according to Statistics Austria. Thus, the use of this IT infrastructure has tripled compared to 2014. The average number of services that an enterprise uses over the Internet has also increased over the years. Additionally, in 2020 every third enterprise (32%) relies on smart devices or systems in at least one of its business areas, such as smart meters, intelligent maintenance sensors for machines and vehicles or sensors for the automation of logistics or production processes.

Road Freight: The transport volume carried out by domestic and foreign road freight vehicles on Austrian roads rose in 2019 compared to the previous year by 4.0% to 598.0 mn tonnes (2018: 575.2 mn tonnes), according to Statistics Austria. Taking into account the distance travelled, this results in a transport performance of 54.5 billion domestic tonne-kilometres, representing an increase of 4.6% over the previous year (2018: 52.1 billion tonne-kilometres).

Construction cost: The construction cost index (CCI 2015) for construction of residential buildings reached 109.4 index points in September 2020, according to calculations by Statistics Austria. This represents an increase of 0.9% over September 2019. Compared to August 2020, the index remained unchanged. The index for road construction declined to 106.8 index points (-1.4% in annual comparison), the index for bridge construction sunk to 107.7 points (-1.2%compared to September 2019), and the index for sanitary engineering stood at 108.9 points (+0.6% in annual comparison).

Used cars: From January to September 2020, 638 551 used passenger cars were registered according to Statistics Austria, 4.0% less than in the same period of the previous year. During the lockdown in March (-48.7%) and April (-39.1%), used passenger car registrations fell sharply compared to the same months of the previous year, while in May the decline was already much less pronounced (-3.2%). However, in January (+3.7%), February (+0.1%), June (+26.8%), July (+8.8%), August (+6.2%) and September (+15.3%), more used passenger cars were registered than in the respective months of 2019.
