Austrian labour market: Some 4.301 million people living in Austria were in employment during the first quarter of 2019, according to the Labour Force Survey carried out by Statistics Austria. Compared to the first quarter of 2018, the number of employees increased by 44 600, while the numbers of self-employed people and unpaid family workers rose only slightly. The number of full-time employees (+59 100) increased considerably, while the number of part-time employees decreased slightly (-14 500). Both sexes benefited from this increase (men +19 800, women +24 900). However, men benefited more from the increase of full-time employment (+49 700, part-time: -30 000) than women (+9 400, part-time: +15 500). Furthermore, the rise in the number of employed people was concentrated especially among the age group 55-64 (+39 700) and persons with Austrian nationality (+40 500). During the first quarter of 2019, the number of unemployed people (222 400) was lower than in the previous year (first quarter of 2018: 235 100). This resulted in an unemployment rate of 4.9%, actually being lower than in the first quarter of 2018 (5.3%). Especially men, younger persons and persons with apprenticeship as highest level of education benefited from this decrease.
